Yes. In many cases, you can update the business name on your Lili account, as long as the change is supported by your official registration documents. Some changes can be handled as a name update for the same business, while others require a new Lili account for a new business.
When you can update the existing business name
You can typically update the business name on your existing Lili account when all of the following are true:
- The legal entity (company) is the same as when you opened your Lili account.
- Your EIN remains the same.
- Your state or local authority has officially approved a new legal name or DBA / trade name for the same business.
Common examples:
- You changed your LLC’s name (e.g., from “Smith Design LLC” to “Smith Studio LLC”).
- You registered a new DBA / trade name while keeping the same underlying entity and EIN.
When you need a new Lili account
You’ll usually need to apply for a new Lili account if:
- You formed a new company with a new EIN (for example, moving from a sole proprietorship to a new LLC or corporation), or
- You want to use your Lili account for a completely different business than the one you originally opened the account for.
In those situations, we cannot simply rename the existing account, because banking and compliance rules require us to treat the new business as a separate customer.
If you’re not sure which situation applies to you, contact us and we’ll help you understand whether you can update your existing account or need a new one.

Explain what you want to change
- Let the agent know whether you are:
- Updating the legal business name for the same entity, or
- Requesting to change to a completely new business (new entity/EIN).
- Let the agent know whether you are:
-
Upload the required documentation via secure link
- The agent will send you a secure upload link via email so you can submit the necessary documents.
Depending on your situation, we’ll request different documentation.
Required documentation
1. Updating the business name (same entity, new legal name)
If you’re keeping the same business and EIN but changing the legal name, you’ll generally need to provide official proof of the name change, such as:
- A state‑filed amendment or name change certificate showing the old and new business names.
- An updated Articles of Organization / Incorporation or similar document showing the new legal name.
- For a new DBA / trade name: a filed DBA certificate or trade‑name registration from your state or local authority.
The document should:
- Clearly show your old business name, new business name, and effective date, and
- Be complete, legible, and issued/approved by the relevant government authority (not just an internal letterhead or screenshot).
2. Changing to a completely new business (new entity/EIN)
If you are switching your account to a different legal entity with a new EIN, you will generally need to open a new Lili account for that business. As part of that process, we’ll ask for:
- Your new IRS EIN assignment letter, and
- Other standard registration documents for the new business (formation documents, etc.).
Our support team will guide you through next steps if your situation requires a new application.
How long does it take?
Once we receive your documents through the secure upload link:
- Most business name update requests are reviewed within 3–5 business days.
- If we have any questions or need additional documentation, we’ll contact you by email.
- We’ll notify you once your request has been approved and completed, or if we’re unable to make the change on your existing account.
Where your updated business name appears
After your business name update is approved and processed, we’ll update your business name in your Lili profile and across key account surfaces, such as:
- Your account profile in the app and on the web.
- Statements and transaction export files.
- Your Bank Letter and voided check image, which you can share with payroll providers, marketplaces, and other partners.
Depending on timing and third‑party systems:
- Some connected external apps (like payroll, accounting, or marketplaces) may still show your old business name until you update it in those systems as well.
We recommend reviewing your connected tools (for example, QuickBooks, Gusto, Stripe, Square, Etsy, eBay) and updating your business name there to match your Lili account so payouts and verifications remain smooth.
