How can we help?

How do I add sales tax or a discount to an invoice?

You can add both discounts and sales tax directly to your Lili invoices so your customers see a clear, accurate total. This applies to any invoice you’re creating or editing in draft status.

Step 1: Open your invoice

  • Go to Invoicing in your Lili account and open an existing draft invoice or start a new one.
  • Add at least one product or service line item to your invoice so the Subtotal section appears at the bottom.

Step 2: Add a discount

  • Under the Subtotal line, find the Discount row and click or tap Add.
  • Choose the discount type: percentage (for example, 10% off) or fixed amount (for example, 100 off).
  • Enter the discount value. Lili applies the discount to the invoice subtotal before any sales tax is calculated.
  • The invoice total will update automatically so you can review the new amount before you send it.

Important: If your discount reduces the invoice to a very low amount, you may need to adjust or remove it to keep the total at a level that makes sense for your business and your payment processing.

Step 3: Add sales tax

  • In the same Subtotal section, find the Sales tax row and select Add.
  • Enter your sales tax rate as a percentage based on your local tax rules (for example, 8.25). Lili uses this rate to calculate tax on the amount after any discount is applied.
  • The tax amount and final invoice total will update instantly, so you can confirm everything looks correct before sending the invoice.

How discounts and tax work together

  • The discount always applies first to the invoice subtotal.
  • Sales tax is then calculated on the discounted subtotal, not the original amount, which keeps your invoice aligned with how many state and local tax rules work.
  • Both the discount and the sales tax appear in the breakdown at the bottom of the invoice, so your customer sees exactly how you arrived at the final total.
